In the beginning of the semester my teacher gave us each a unique "pet" or a random object. We were to photograph this pet for three months. Then as a part of a final, we had to turn this "pet" into something meaningful, find an article and design a 20-page booklet incorporating the pet. I had a random piece of plastic as my pet. Can you see the alphabet? This was my first graphic design 230 Assignment (which I had one weekend to do), we had to create an alphabet with objects that resemble letters. This came from Duston's fishing gear. Each object was photographed in natural light outside on a white peice of paper. Then I had to photoshop each letter out and put it into this poster.

What is a .GIF? "The Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) is a bitmap image format that was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and has since come into widespread usage on the World Wide Web due to its wide support and portability." A GIF can be an animated image. Each of these were 15 photographs and put together in Photoshop using the animation tools. And then saved for the web as a GIF. They will play continuously...

This was a long assignment I did last semester. Every week I went out to the same spot, different times of the day and took the photograph. The idea was that we understand natural light better. Some pictures are warm others are cold depending on the time of day and location of the sun. It was a fun assignment, but glad when it was finally over.

This was a really different assignment. We had to take at least 8 photographs of the same subject and combine them together. The panograph (the one of the flooding stream) has opacity changes in them so the more overlapped the better you can see. The top one is of Duston, I took enough that I was able to make him look more exaggerated in height.

San Serifs and Camping

Over Memorial Day Weekend, I obviously went camping and to my surprise, everything was in san serifs! There was an entire bulletin board of all San Serif fonts (without the little lines). I took pictures of every sign I saw - not one serif font. Pretty interesting!

Each photograph I took, down-sized, edited and turned into the collage in Photoshop.

Oh I and I should probably mention, I am in a typography class, so I have a small obsession with type now. Check out my typography blog!

Each photo took three shots. One under-exposed, one over-exposed and one just right. Photoshop HDR pro combines the three and brings out the details in the shadows and highlights. I realize some might look over-edited, but they are fun to do.

JPEG vs RAW

This is was my first assignment for my ART 361 Digital Photography Class (I know VERY basic). We had to set our camera to shoot in JPEG and Raw. And then only edit the RAW.

What's the difference? JPEG's are much smaller compressed files, only 256 levels of brightness (think of a scale from white to black, it would take 256 pixels (squares) to gradually change from black to white). Every camera automatically does small "touch-ups" on JPEGS such as auto white balance and contrast.

A RAW image on the hand, has 16,384 levels of brightness. This way you can restore the "blown out" or "too dark" parts of the image. The camera does not edit these images. This way a photographer has all the possibitilies to edit the photo in his/her way.

Series: “Cleaning – An Underappreciated Art”

I remember as a young kid always having a chore list. It started as simple tasks like dusting the piano or picking up my toys then grew to things like vacuuming the stairs and sweeping the floors. However, as I got older, the more time I spent at school, sports, work, and with friends, the more my chore list declined.

Never did I realize the countless hours my mother put into keeping our house clean; never did I realize just how clean my house always was. I took for granted every morning I woke up to a clean kitchen and polished floors. And I truly realize that now that I am married and taking care of my own family.

I always thought being a “stay-at-home-mom” was the ultimate life-style because you didn’t have a full-time job to go to each day. Little did I know then that washing, drying, ironing, spraying, sweeping, scrubbing, sanitizing, and vacuuming of a house was in fact a full-time job. To my mother and others out there, I dedicate this series to them. Day in and day out family members make messes, and day in and day out moms are always there to pick up after them. It’s what “cleaning” is, an under appreciated art.

Becca Astle and I have been in an excel class this semester. So Fun ;) Who knew there was so much to this program! And who knew how much time we would spend studying and doing projects, tutorials, case studies and quizes. We've flown through a 600+ page text book. And believe me Excel can do more than you will ever know. We keep telling ourselves, someday we are going to really need to know how to do this...I wonder when that day will come.

Well, it happened again, I forgot to charge my phone and didn't make it the whole day. I can't believe how disconnected and insecure I feel when my phone is dead. It is ridiculous. I am not even one of those people that text a hundred times a day. I probably send out about 10 texts a day. What scares me is the thought "oh know what if something happens, how will I get a hold of Duston".

And I don't dare drive without a phone. There is something about having a phone in your pocket that gives you a sense of security. This made me think today, how did my parents grow up with out cell phones??

I took this today while I was outside shooting photos and I couldn't believe how hard the wind was blowing. It was so windy and cold here! This snow has spilled over this sidewalk thanks to the wind. The "blur" is really the wind bl0wing the snow. The three top things I hate:

1) being cold,

2) the snow,

and

3) the wind

Translation: Rexburg. Enough said.

So today was the longest photo class ever....the lecture went on for 2 and half hours straight. So I had cameras on my mind today. In the office I work at, there is a shelf full of these old cameras that the previous Dean owned. It is a really neat collection, and not very many people know about them. Funny story, a few month ago my husband hit the curb with our car, it bent the door just a tad to eventually bend out the trim. So it has been sticking out a few inches until today...I took the car through the car wash and when we came out, it was sticking about a foot out (see "before" pic). So we used "mighty putty" that my grandpa got us for Christmas and tape to put it back. Ha ha ha. Now it looks even more ridiculous. We didn't even have real duct tape...

There are several great tools for cutting people out. One is the quick selection tool. That is what I used for Duston's picture. I selected him and then took him out of the picture and on to a blank white canvas. I used "refine edges" to make the edges look better. For the tractor image I used the magic selection tool and put the tolerance up to 70. It selected all of the sky automatically, I then deleted it. Put the new picture on a white blank canvas. I used "refined edges" to soften them.

MOVING LIGHT CAPTURE

Light looks Like Fire: 11/9/10. 10pm. Nikon D5000. F/3.5, 3s. I duplicated the image, and did a hard light overlay. Added lines on top and bottom. Glow Sticks moving rapidly.

LIGHT PAINTING

Filling a cup with Light: 11/9/10. 10:20pm. Nikon D5000. F/3.5, 1.5s. Used tripod, glow stick. Cropped, contrast and clarity.

CAMERA MOTION PAINTING

Little Lights: 11/9/10, 10:30pm. Nikon D5000. F/3.5, 5s. All the spot were just laying on a blanket, camera created the movement. Duplicated, brought in blue light and hard light overlay.

This project was so fun to do. I had my husband swirl around a orange glow stick to create that fire looking picture. He is holding is and slightly moving it in the coca-cola cup, making the affect that he is pouring the light into coca-cola glass. The last picture was taken after the glow stick broke and spread the glowing liquid all over my carpet. Those little glowing spots are on the floor, I just moved the camera as I took it to make them look like shooting stars. The blue light is from the little camera key chain I won from Sis. Esplin, I just turned that on while I took a long-shutter picture.

Poster, Large Format Prints

1. Waterfall and 23x19 in.
2. 10/9/10, 5:00pm. Mesa Falls Idaho.
3. Nikon D5000. Shutter Priority, f/36, 1/10s.
4. I cropped, strengthened clarity, blacks and vibrance in Camera Raw. I then copied the layer and used Overlay to bring out a cool contrast. I then added a border and brought it into the picture, I lowered the opacity and used HARD LIGHT which made a cool border. I then duplicated that and made it smaller and brought it in to become the second strip around the image. The resolution was high so I didn't have to mess with that.
5. I have always wanted to capture a picture of a waterfall that has the soft motion affect. Before this class, every time I tried to lengthen my shutter the picture would be overexposed. Then we did that case study and I realized I don't have to have a super long shutter to get that affect. So while I was on field trip, I brought my camera and decided to test the waters. I took several at different lengths and found that even1/10s still creates that soft water motion with out over-exposing it! I sat it on a ledge since I didn't have a tripod. But it still came out clear.

4. I ran it through HDR. Cropped, Sharpened, vibrant and Clarity in Camera Raw. In photoshop I added two borders with strokes. I also added texture to the "matte" to make it look real.
5. I took this photo because I am from Arizona and we don't really have a fall season, so this is beauty to me! I loved the colors in it my picture. It is neutral colors (so its great to hang up in a house) but it's still vibrant. I wanted a to capture a picture that would go well in a home. I held up those leaves far from the tree to have a shallow depth of field. Since my picture frames are admormal sizes I had to print them on the poster at walmart. I kept a really high resolution for this and it turned out great. I did strengthen the clarity on both images on Camera Raw to help the quality (a long with a lot of other edits). I cut them out put them in to my frame and re-taped the back of it.

This turned out cheesy, I know. I cut him out and blurred his edges, so it didn't look so jagedy. Then I put him on his hand. I brighten the levels on the hand to match his face. But it still looks cheesy after all. I tried to use the liquify tool to make his foot look like it was going into the hand, but that didn't look good either.

This was one of my favorite projects done in this class, and the perfect week to do it. Not only was it halloween, but the change in the seasons were so obvious. The leaves falling, the sunset, the rain, the ice on the windshield, I really tried to capture that change in my photos.

The two-spread page was also fun to make (a lot longer then I thought). I scanned a wrinkled piece of paper and used that as my background. I then worked with the photos and sized and cropped them to fit the image really well. The text was put in the right corner and I copped the image and lessened the opacity to make a great afftect. Lastly, I used some shapes to bring the whole image together. The final book will take a looooooong time to finish, but now I have a template to play with.

Here are my three edited pictures I took. I added borders, text, and some color edits and other fun stuff from the tutorials. The paint-on effect is my favorite. In photoshop you use the paint brush tools and "paint" the image on to the canvas. By that I mean ever stroke part of the picture comes back, makings that paint brush affect. I really enjoy editing pictures like this, it's like re-creating a photograph. The poster was an easy way to make a image and turn it into something creative and meaningful.

This is a new kind of photography called scanography...it's using a scanner as a camera. The first one I laid out all the images and items form my wedding and scanned it as one image. The second one of Woody was multiple scans and then put together into one. They show little depth. But I like how they looked!

I enjoyed the color replace, that is fun to play with and change the color of peoples clothes. I did not like the color match, I had to keep trying pictures to find the right balance. I don't think I will use this tool much. Editing portraits are fun, I really enjoy making people look good.

I really enjoy portraits, however, it is much easier to do when the person wants their portraits taken instead of helping me fulfill an assignment. When people want theirs done, they tend to perk up, dress better, make-up ect. I do however enjoy editing these. The enviormental was hard, because I had tow worry about the background as much as the person. I enjoy them!

Under Water Cabin: 10-9-10, 1:20pm, Montana (Near Quake Lake). F/7.1, 1/200s. Nikon D5000 - No Tripod. I edited this RAW image in Camera Raw, I brought out the colors.

Once again, this picture was taken at my field trip last weekend. After the earthquake of 1959, the river shifted, and this happened to many of the houses - they were submerged underwater. This one has been washed up and left since then. With Camera raw I was able to bring back a lot of color.

I took this on my field trip as well (this was in Montana). Although I am only learning Camera Raw (in Photoshop), I'm loving it. It is so easy to use, it is doesn't lower the quality of your Jpeg either. It is like your "painting" your image into a whole new vibrate image. I hope I don't over do it though.

I took this at a Science (Natural Disasters Field Trip). We hiked up to this boulder and the view was so pretty. I realize that if your not careful, the panorama will turn out really short (after you crop it). Next time I will use a tripod. I used photomerge, which is amazing and really easy.

Gravity: 9/29/10 - 2:30pm, F/4.0, 1/4000. Nikon D5000. B&W layer, Masking layers.

Water Freeze: 9/29/10 – 5:30pm f/5.6, 1/4000. Nikon D5000. Warmed the image in Camera Raw.

"Freezing" a picture was much easier to do then creating motion. But I enjoyed both. I had to find a really dark room because the shutter is open for 6 seconds (which means a lot of light will come in). I also used a tripod and tilt it to get that sideways affect. I did however have to lighten up the ghost picture a little bit. The freeze shots just had really fast shutters.

Here I followed the Antique Grunge (34) to overlay these two images. I choose just the blue pixels and brought them over. I then duplicated it twice to make the spirals more. I then added a mask layer and smooth out some hard edges. I really like to use overlays they make boring images amazing.

I did several takes on this assignment but didn't like how a lot of them turned out, I don't like the pictures where something is upclose and out of focus, it seems off to me. This picture was taken up by the old mill. I found this weird flower and a pile of junk and tried to make it interesting. Since the colors are all browns, yellows and some greens, I decided to name it "fall colors"

HDR is amazing, this is the first time I have ever done them. They turn my boring dull shots into one amazing shot. Even the HDR with just one photo looks amazing. The saturation detail pops. I really enjoy doing these HDR with shots with windows in them, the light from the windows really makes them pop.

I realized how important light is to capturing a good portrait. Also a tripod is the best. I found that soft light (light through the window) is the best. I also practiced editing in camera raw.

I loved how the color in the dandelion came out, such a bright green. I also enjoyed taking pictures of the ducks, they came right up to me (probably because they thought I had bread). The bunny was the hardest to take because he kept running away from me. He also blended into the surroundings.

This was a really fun activity for me, except I did get a little frustrated learning the aperture and shutter priorities. They kept coming out too dark. I went to the Rexburg Unplugged festival where I took most of these. It is amazing how you look for one color, and it jumps out every where.

1.Independence day: July 4 2010, 9:00pm, Star Valley Wyoming, F/3.5, 3.0s, Nikon D5000, Tripod. I took this while my family was setting off fireworks; I tried all kinds of different shutter speeds. The only editing I did was added the border and text, the color turned out great.

2. LOVE: July 4, 2010, 8:30pm, Bedford, Wyoming, F/3.5, 8s, Nikon D5000, Tripod. Cropped. I told my cousins to hold sparklers and move them in same letter for 8 seconds, it turned out pretty cool I thought.

3. Front Yard: June 7, 2010, 5:30, Star valley, Wyoming, f/3.5, 1/60s, Nikon D5000. This is standing off the property of my In-laws, a beautiful valley in Wyoming. I used curves to emphasis the color green.

I took most of these pictures for my photography class last semester. Just this past semester I have really gotten in to taking photos. The color pictures were all taken in Star Valley Wyoming (2 hours from here) where my In-laws live. It is beautiful in the summer. The other pictures were just practicing different angles, shutter speeds and f-stops. I also practiced editing in black and white, which I found I really enjoyed.

There is a beginner, intermmediate and expert level of teams, so everyone can play. Each team must have two girls on the court at all times. So why would girls and guys want to play together?
